Origin

Onika is a member of our family of kumquats, and in many ways is characteristic of the small fruit- bearing trees. The kumquat can be used in bonsai – with its name derived from the Cantonese translation of "golden tangerine". Its significance in eastern culture is significant, fittingly a fortunella symbolises good luck in China and other Asian countries, and they are frequently given as gifts during the New Year celebrations – which makes Onika the perfect choice for a housewarming gift

Flowering/fruiting

Even for a kumquat, Onika is a striking plant with long, lush leaves - and a colourful harvest of edible fruit. Each of which closely resembles a small orange, about the size and shape of a large olive. Onika makes for an attractive contrast to the subtle designs of a contemporary home – perhaps bringing a soft, organic element to the modern kitchen. One of our earliest fruiting fortunella varieties, Onika fruits throughout the year from September onward. Like our other varieties of kumquat, the fruit may be eaten whole, skin and all. The reason for this is that although the flesh is quite sour, the skin is surprisingly sweet. Although refreshing when eaten whole, some choose to bite the end of the fruit and squeeze out the excess juice - leaving only the sweetness of the skin. Already becoming a delicacy, the kumquat is a fashionable ingredient in contemporary cuisine. Now that’s a welcome housewarming gift…
